Far away in the West, in a foreign world, she looks back at her life in the east of a Germany united in 1990, surrenders to the memories that have left their mark on her and absorbs her new environment with all her sense, the people, the landscape on the edge of the Pacific, life in California, the city of émigrés such as Bertolt Brecht, Thomas Mann, Lion Feuchtwanger.
Three stories lead from this turning point in Christa Wolf's life to the subjects and motifs that have mader her famous. In Santa Monica she remembers those who served as her role model in the early days, Seghers, Fürnberg, Bredel, Becher, a tragic generation caught between two fronts. Once again, we find the Christa Wolf who questioned the models of her childhood in Nagelprobe or who looked for new paths for her language in Im Stein, a self-questioning, open and unadorned Wolf. And we meet a narrator who, in two very personal, ironically amusing texts, provides us with information on what holds the very heart of her world together.
