Since 1980, this series of Short Political Writings has collected Jürgen Habermas’s analyses, commentaries and diagnoses of the times. Titles such as The New Obscurity have long since passed into standard usage.
In this volume’s titular essay, Habermas continues his intervention into European politics, which has attracted much attention in recent years. In view of the danger of technocratic élites seizing power and reshaping democracy to conform to the demands of the financial markets, Habermas offers a plea for transnational solidarity. In addition to Habermas’s timely Heine Prize speech, the volume also contains portraits of thinkers such as Martin Buber, Jan Philipp Reemtsma, and Ralf Dahrendorf, as well as an essay in which the author engages with the decisive role played by Jewish re-immigrants after the Second World War. This twelfth volume completes a kaleidoscopic series representing the groundwork for an intellectual history of the Federal Republic of Germany.
»When almost everyone else is caught up in breathless crisis management, someone has got to keep an eye on the big picture of European politics. Jürgen Habermas is that someone.« Franz Müntefering on On Europe’s Constitution.
