Peter Sloterdijk was born in 1947 and is Professor of Aesthetics and Philosophy at the Institute of Design in Karlsruhe.

The unmistakable characteristic of Peter Sloterdijk's thought and writings is the way he embeds current issues in a long history. In this way, he succeeds in redefining the current condition humaine, visualizes it from a perspective hitherto unknown, and finds evidence for unexpected or undesired linkages.

About

How are individual freedom and the greater good compatible today? In order to shed light on this subject, in his talk Peter Sloterdijk sketches the origin and the development of freedom and subjectivity as reactions to mechanisms that could be described as variants of stress experiences.

In his by now well-known exciting, amusing, and simultaneously surprising way the author traces an arc from the Roman Lucrezia to Beckett’s Victor in Eleutheria, and follows Rousseau floating upon Lake Biel where, meditating alone in his boat, he enjoyed nothing »but himself and his own existence«.

Since that time one of the main activities of the modern age has been integrating the individual into larger psycho-political bodies – a highly unlikely undertaking. And nevertheless that very large body called society is nothing other than an oscillating community of anxiety promoted and propagated by themes of stress. Finally, Peter Sloterdijk’s Berliner Lecture on Liberty flows into penetrating reconsiderations of civilization and liberalism through which freedom in the 21st century can be reconsidered.
