In 1986, the year of the Chernobyl reactor disaster, Suhrkamp Verlag published Risk Society by Ulrich Beck, a classic of sociological diagnostic, translated into over thirty languages. In 1999, World Risk Society has been published in English by Polity Press. Much has happened since then, our understanding of global risks and our attention have increased considerably.
World Risk Society: On the Search for Lost Security reflects this process. It is the potentialities of the World Risk Society, destructive and constructive, that Beck explores in his new international bestseller.
The scope of global danger in the Risk Society of the eighties seems idyllic in comparison to the present: The RAF terrorists seem »homey« alongside the world-wide presence of al-Qaida, the current financial crises that are devastating lives, and the fact that even economists are starting to see that a massive ecological catastrophe is hardly some science fiction future.
Risks today have the destructive power of wars and occur in every field. New to the World Risk Society is the manipulation of the appearance of risk for political gain. The result: fear becomes a part of daily existence. Security supercedes freedom and equality. Despite this, Ulrich Beck is anything but an alarmist; the anticipation of catastrophe is changing international politics fundamentally. It is creating a new common consciousness of the possibilities of a »cosmopolitan political realism«.
