They remained unpublished for decades: Hans Magnus Enzensberger's Frankfurt lectures on poetry from the winter semester of 1964/65. Using these extensive texts, Enzensberger's writings on literature spanning half a century have been assembled for the first time into one volume.
It is a seamless collection of essays that includes the many friendly, sad and contentious disagreements he had with classical and contemporary thinkers, some of them previously unpublished.
The range spans from extensive essay to footnote and margin notation (Scholia). Enzensberger unfolds his assumptions and aesthetic positions in both open analyses as well as elegant examples, bringing them to a synthesis of poetry and science.
Hans Magnus Enzensberger was born in Kaufbeuren in 1929. He died on November 24, 2022, aged 93, in Munich. As a poet, essayist, writer, biographer, editor and translator, he was one of the world’s most influential and internationally renowned German intellectuals.
