Hermann Hesse, born 1877 in Calw/Württemberg as the son of a Baltic German missionary and the daughter of a Württembergian indologist, died in August 1962 in Montagnola near Lugano, Italy. In 1946, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature, and 1955 the Friedenspreis des Deutschen Buchhandels (Peace Prize of the German Book Trade). After an apprenticeship to become a bookseller, he began to work as a freelance author in 1904. He is one of the most famous German authors of the 20th century.

About

»My childhood days I think of now, / A long-forgotten fairy tale sound awakens: / Bells ring and on silver shoes / The Christkind walks though the white night.« It’s mainly childhood memories that the poet Hermann Hesse associates with Christmas. But the older he gets the more Hesse distances himself from the business-minded sentimentality that by now shapes the »holiday of love«. A dichotomy between awe and mocking distance permeates the contemplations and recollections gathered here that Hesse wrote on this »always wonderful holiday despite all falsehood«.

Praise

»If you like Hesse, you’re going to love this book, because his thoughts on Christmas present in nuce the poet’s outlook on the world – and his language in the most beautiful bloom.« Deutschlandradio Kultur
