About

Durs Grünbein’s volumes of poetry are known for grasping their subjetcs in larger and larger circles, in their concentric sprawl they seem made for this age of globalisation. His new collection of poetry follows the outline of an exhibition. Works from the last five to eight years are presented in seven sections.

There are images of a journey, excursions into the unknown routine, self portraits and history paintings, studies of love and sex life. In this strangely floating poetry interiority and the external world are caught in an inextricable tension: It is the vital principle of Grünbein’s verse. The succinct individual piece, the ultimate goal of his writing, is only conceivable as the results of a serial practice. Each of these poems is an example of a painterly poetry. Each, in its own way, poses the question: What is imagination and how does it change our consciousness?
