Carl Schmitt

Carl Schmitt

Carl Schmitt (1888-1985) was a German jurist and political theorist. After 1947, he moved to his native town of Plattenberg from where he continued to have great influence on political thought with his ideas and terms he coined despite his previous dedication to National Socialism.

About

As Carl Schmitt’s replies have also left visible traces in Blumenberg’s work, in addition to the complete correspondence and other unpublished texts from the Blumenberg estate the edition also features excerpts from those works already published. For the first time the dispute between the philosopher and the controversial jurist is available in its entirety.

»For this reason I would like to communicate to you the bare fact that in 1971 I sought and found contact to Carl Schmitt. There will be much more to say about this later,« Hans Blumenberg 1977 wrote to Jacob Taubes in view of a controversy, which began with Die Legitimität der Neuzeit (The Legitimacy of the Modern Age). Although Schmitt took Blumenberg’s objections to his theory seriously, he nevertheless rejected them decidedly. The dispute was continued in a good dozen hitherto unpublished letters which Blumenberg and Schmitt exchanged on the foundations of the modern world view and anthropology, Goethe’s “doctrine of the colossus” not to mention the philosophy of history, eschatology and suicide.
