»Axel Honneth has found wide reverberation with his socio-philosophical work. (...) In the perception of the profession Honneth stands next to such philosophers as Martha Nussbaum, Robert Pippin, Avishai Margalit, Judith Butler. That his books find such considerable resonance betrays as much about the substance of theory as about the authorial talent of the writer.« Jürgen Habermas, Die Zeit

About

The essays collected here are meant as preliminary studies of a philosophical/historical nature for a theory of intersubjectivity.

Through a critical discussion of classical approaches, ranging from Fichte through to psychoanalytical theories of object relationships, Honneth attempts to define the normative conditions for inter-human encounters. In the process, he discerns not only the constitutive significance of the "third term" for interaction between human subjects, but also the degree to which intersubjective recognition depends on corporeal means of expression.
