»Philosophy is a creator of desires and fulfiller of desires of great refinement.«

About

What do we mean when speaking about reality? What does realism of thoughts mean? How do humans come in contact with reality and become conscious of it? These fundamental questions occupied Hans Blumenberg all through his life, and they remained important undercurrents in many of his books. He never published a monograph about these topics, but he had been planning to do so, as documents in his literary estates show.

In his archive, under the acronym REA, there exists a large bundle of print-ready manuscripts from the 1970s; Blumenberg had even jotted down a title: »Reality and Realism«.

In an intensive examination of the concept of reality, both from a systematic as well as a historic perspective, Blumenberg masterfully works out its historical, anthropologic and cultural dimensions. Among other things, he shows that the thematization of that which we call reality happens via detours and only when, through a disruption, we are forced to question our approach to the world that we have been taking for granted. Realism and Reality is a masterpiece and an essential component of Blumenberg’s Theory of the Lifeworld.

Praise

»Blumenberg observes and describes in a captivating manner how people start taking detours the very moment the well has been dug and survival has been secured. Everyone knows this from their own experience: leaving a little early so as to be able to take the longer, but more beautiful route, the detour, to the next appointment.« Eckart Goebel, DIE WELT

»Hans Blumenberg is also robust in his secondary works, he juggles with the known, he shares inspiration.« Jonis Hartmann, Fixpoetry
