Sabbatai Zevi is the first seminal study of heresy, of seceding from Judaism. Scholem dates the beginnig of modern Jewish history to Sabbatianism. The history of Sabbatianism, however, has been overshadowed by official Jewish historiography for centuries. Scholem’s book closes a big historical gap. Beyond that, it is a standard work of theology, since, in this study, Scholem compares basic concepts of Judaism and Christianity while at the same time highlighting their differences.
