About

From the early modern period and increasingly so since from the Enlightenment onwards, divine privilege of possessing unconditional truth has been challenged and made more democratic. The revelation of truth was also a theme of the critique of authoritarianism. In this posthumous text, Hans Blumenberg traces the metaphor of the naked truth through the history of philosophy, but with a greater awareness of the price to be paid for this gesture of unmasking. Nietzsche, the defender of rhetoric, and Freud, who developed his theory without regard for the wellbeing of individual patients, serve as opposite poles for Blumenberg’s essays in this book.

Praise

»Guided by Nietzsche, Blumenberg manages to show in detail, intellectually and stilistically brilliant, which changes the use of truth as metaphor has undergone in European thought since the Enlightenment and Romanticism.« Felix Philipp Ingold, Neue Zürcher Zeitung

»No overarching motion in terms of the history of ideas becomes visible here, one needn’t fear a history of philosophy in disguise, the abandoned virtuosity of a reader who simply seems to have everything at hand, sets the tone.« Helmut Meyer, Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung

»Blumenberg is among the most easily readable and most entertaining philosophers of the second half of the 20th century not only because his prose is melodious, captivatingly beautiful and because he is a master of trenchant narration who knows how to exploit the epistemological value of anecdotes.« Eckart Goebel, DIE WELT

»Blumenberg, a giant among the great philosophers of the 20th century, was an eminent literary stylist.« Christian Thomas, Frankfurter Rundschau

»This is an impressive book, which is hopefully going to become a much-read and canonical work like his other works on metaphorology.« Leander Scholz, Deutschlandfunk
