Would he have gone to Turin if he had known what awaited him there?

After the suicide of his best friend, Rudolf, the narrator is summoned to attend to his estate. A difficult undertaking, as Rudolf, a well known writer and professor, had amassed not only a rather extensive collection of house pets on his deck during the past years, but also a literal mountain of books and research materials, somewhere under which supposedly lies his Opus Magnum, a companion and key to the German federal mentality over the last 60 years, something Rudolf allegedly worked on »like a maniac«.
