Though different, Walter Benjamin and Bertolt Brecht were connected to each other through a »strong literary friendship« (Elisabeth Hauptmann). As contemporaries in the century of the extreme they developed models of art and of observing art, of politics, of thinking, and of life, at times in a »tentatively extreme« manner, at times playfully. All in all, the conversations between the famous Svendborger chess players may remind us of the royal game itself: full of attrition tactics, surprise attacks, retreats, strategic partnerships, checkmates—and then another game.

On the occasion of an exhibition at the Akademie der Künste in Berlin the present volume collects essays and artistic commentaries (drawings, prints, photographs, montages), which cast bright light onto an extraordinary constellation.
