In the 1950s and 1960s, Hans Blumenberg considered combining a philosophy of technology with a philosophy of time, which is only rarely mentioned today. This may be due to the fact that he never wrote a »Philosophy of Technology« – however, a series of shorter writings in which he develops his idea on the subject poignantly were found in his literary estate.

This may be due to the fact that he never wrote a »Philosophy of Technology« – however, a series of shorter writings in which he develops his idea on the subject poignantly were found in his literary estate.
While these were initially influenced by a clear distinction between nature and technology, Blumenberg increasingly distances himself from this influence when writing The Legitimacy of the Modern Age, and the concepts of self-preservation and self-assertion become more prominent.
This volume, for the first time, assembles all of Blumenberg’s contributions to these topics and thus constitutes his Philosophy of Technology.
