Ludwig Börne Prize 2013 for Peter Sloterdijk

News
20.02.2013

Peter Sloterdijk has been awarded the Ludwig Börne Prize 2013. The prize is endowed with a prize money of € 20.000 and will be presented on June 16 at St. Paul’s Church in Frankfurt am Main.

In the accompanying statement, judge Hans Ulrich Gumbrecht (Stanford University) wrote that Sloterdijk consistently spurs the German public sphere to »intensive states of intellectual alertness«.

The Börne Prize is named after the political writer and satirist Ludwig Börne, a native of Frankfurt, whose essays and journalistic writings showed strong support for the ideals of the 1848 revolution. Previous recipients of the award include Marcel Reich-Ranicki, Hans Magnus Enzensberger, and President Joachim Gauck.

Peter Sloterdijk was born in 1947 and is professor emeritus of Aesthetics and Philosophy at the Institute of Design in Karlsruhe. The unmistakable characteristic of Peter Sloterdijk’s thought and writings is the way he embeds current issues in a long history. This way, he succeeds in redefining the current human condition, visualizes it from a hitherto unknown perspective, and finds evidence for unexpected or unsought connections. His book Kritik der zynischen Vernunft is one of the biggest-selling philosophical books of the 20th century.
