Thomas Bernhard, one of the most important authors of the post-war era, would have celebrated his 90th birthday on February 9, 2021.

Born in Heerlen, Netherlands, in 1931, Bernhard died on February 12, 1989 in Ohlsdorf, Austria. He made a name for himself as an inveterate grump, provocateur and master of exaggeration. His literary œuvre includes poetry, autobiographical stories, novels and plays. Bernhard is considered one of the most important and defining Austrian writers, his impact extends far beyond the German-speaking world.

Thomas Bernhard has received numerous national and international awards and accolades, including the Grand Austrian State Prize (1968), the Georg Büchner Prize (1970), the Premio Mondello (1983) and the Prix Medicis (1988).
