Modern thought as a whole has been characterised as a »philosophy of the subject«. The subject owes this distinction to the hope that it might serve as the ultimate principle of the justification of knowledge. But the problem of establishing the structure of the subject itself has been largely ignored.
This structure is the focus of the philosopher Manfred Frank’s latest book. His research on the problem of subjectivity has informed his work on the history of philosophy and the philosophy of mind since 1986.
The book charts a course through the history of modern theories of the subject with reference to Fichte, Brentano, Sartre, and Henrich.
