You Must Change Your Life / Du mußt dein Leben ändern
On Human Engineering
In his new long-format essay on the nature of humanity, Peter Sloterdijk criticizes the thesis of a return to religion.

It is not religion that is returning, but there is instead something entirely fundamental spreading in contemporary society: the individual as an agent that, in the exercising of that agency, creates the self. Rainer Maria Rilke formulated the drive to this sortof existence at the turn of the 20th century: »You must change your...

Rainer Maria Rilke formulated the drive to this sortof existence at the turn of the 20th century: »You must change your life.«

In his appeal for the spread of the realm of agency of the individual and society, Peter Sloterdijk lays the framework for a foundational and fundamental new breed of anthropology. At the core of his study of humanity is an insight into the self-creating element of every human. His activities incessantly affect him: work affects the worker; the communicated affects the communicator; emotions affect the emoter ... Expressive agents are those people who most clearly embody this sort of existence: farmers; workers; soldiers; writers; yogis; orators; musical virtuosos; models. This book collects their training schedules and performance into a satisfying and informative lecture on the practices that are necessary inbeing human.

Persons

Peter Sloterdijk was born in 1947 and is professor emeritus of Aesthetics and Philosophy at the Institute of Design in Karlsruhe. The unmistakable characteristic of Peter Sloterdijk’s thought and writings is the way he embeds current issues in a long history. This way, he succeeds in redefining the current human condition, visualizes it from a hitherto unknown perspective, and finds evidence for unexpected or unsought connections. His book Kritik der zynischen Vernunft is one of the biggest-selling philosophical books of the 20th century.
