A society that was imagined to play out like a big neighbourhood party with frankfurters, falafel and cevapcici – as a noncommittally tolerant co-existence.


Yet authors and directors such as Vladimir Kaminer or Fatih Akin do not want to be reduced solely to their migration background any longer and have changed the way we think about German culture. According to Mark Terkessidis, the old concepts should consequently be overcome. He makes the case for a radical intercultural opening. All institutions should have to be examined with regards to whether all people, no matter their background, are actually receiving equal chances and possibilities to participate. That is the only way for making the potentials of a diverse society productive.
