Hermann Hesse, born 1877 in Calw/Württemberg as the son of a Baltic German missionary and the daughter of a Württembergian indologist, died in August 1962 in Montagnola near Lugano, Italy. In 1946, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature, and 1955 the Friedenspreis des Deutschen Buchhandels (Peace Prize of the German Book Trade). After an apprenticeship to become a bookseller, he began to work as a freelance author in 1904. He is one of the most famous German authors of the 20th century.

About

At the age of 40, in the middle of World War I, Hermann Hesse started to paint. To him it was an »outlet, so as to be able to bear life even in the direst of times« and to gain some distance from literature. »I’m holding my painting chair,« he writes in 1920, »it is my magic apparatus and Faust coat with whose help I have performed magic thousands of times and won the fight against stupid reality.«

A few coherent sequences of pictures and watercolour albums have been preserved from some of his painting excursions in the Tessin. This book presents a series of his most appealing works included in one of those albums from 1922 but it also features pieces from later years. Together with Hesse’s contemplations on his painting and personal testimonials from his letters they make understandable that Romain Rolland writes to Hesse in 1921: »I am delighted by your album of watercolours. They are as succulent as fruit and as graceful as flowers. They make one’s heart rejoice.«

Praise

»Hesse is almost as much a painter as he is a poet. His poetry and paintings show an intimate, accomplished connection to the phenomenal world.« André Gide, 28.11.2018
