We ourselves have become the weakest link in our society. We seem to have lost ourselves; our very self in our so-called advanced and liberated societies.
The modern individual might perceive himself a self-conceived and self-conscious, he has nevertheless become fragile and lost sight of himself by being torn apart n boundlessness. Although originally sprung from pre-modern tradition, convention and religion as tasks primary to philosophy, modern philosophy itself has put the other rather than the I in its center of preoccupations with the focus of ethics.
Schmid gets us acquainted again with a conscious and emancipated relationship with ourselves concordingly with the great tradition of philosophy: to be friends with oneself: that was once Aristotele´s saying; the art of living with oneself, built in the tradition of philosophers like Seneca, Montaigne and Nietzsche, has been somehow left off by contemporary thinkers. Schmid´s essay is a treaty about relearning, rethinking, reacquiring the sociability with ourselves, taking into account the existential experience of fear and relating to the possibility of a plausible answering to it. Rarely a philosopher has made the attempt to elude the question, for a grounding of the relationship of the singular individual to himself and his being in the world, in such a thorough and poetic way: The result is a fruitful reflection on the seeking of sense we are so persistent about. A manual for us to create our signification in contemporary living and the departure point of a differently modern society.
Wilhelm Schmid was born in 1953 and lives in Berlin. For many years, he taught philosophy at the University of Erfurt, was a visiting porfessor in Riga, Latvia, and Tbilisi, Georgia, and worked as a »philosophical counsellor« at a hospital near Zurich, Switzerland. He is a popular guest speaker and has been giving lectures in China and South Korea since 2010. He was awarded the Meckatzer Prize for Philosophy in 2012 and the Egnér Prize in 2013. His works have been translated into 25 languages, and his bestselling book Gelassenheit has sold over 600,000 copies.
