About

In the 1950s and 1960s, Hans Blumenberg considered combining a philosophy of technology with a philosophy of time, which is only rarely mentioned today. This may be due to the fact that he never wrote a »Philosophy of Technology« – however, a series of shorter writings in which he develops his idea on the subject poignantly were found in his literary estate.

While these were initially influenced by a clear distinction between nature and technology, Blumenberg increasingly distances himself from this influence when writing The Legitimacy of the Modern Age, and the concepts of self-preservation and self-assertion become more prominent.
This volume, for the first time, assembles all of Blumenberg’s contributions to these topics and thus constitutes his Philosophy of Technology.
