The Hornets

Handke’s first novel The Hornets, first published in 1966, is an attempt at describing the genesis of a novel. Many years ago, man has read a book: or maybe he hasn’t even read the book but was told about the book by someone else. But now, one summer’s day, he is reminded of that forgotten book he believes to have read ages and ages ago, maybe because what happens to him corresponds to what happened to the blind hero of the novel. From the shattered pieces he thinks he remembers, from words, sentences, half-forgotten images, the man constructs the novel but in such a way that one can‘t decide whether the events of the »new« novel concern only the »protagonist« of the old novel or whether they also affect the one that imagines them.
