Valerie Fritsch and Deniz Ohde Longlisted for the German Book Prize 2020

We are delighted about the Longlist nomination of Heart Valves by Johnson & Johnson by Valerie Fritsch and Scattered Light by Deniz Ohde for the German Book Prize 2020.

In her comment on the nominations, spokesperson of the jury Hanna Engelmeier states: »Contrary to reading the news of recent months, dealing with the more than 200 submitted titles offered many glimmers of hope [...] The many [submitted] novels in particular use (auto)biographical storytelling, there are also titles that deal with historical subjects. The longlist reflects those focal points, but at the same time captures novels dedicated to the more recent political debates on identity.« The longlist not only represented »a diversity of subjects but also the diversity of this season's poetic forms of expression.«

Since 2005, the German Book Prize is presented to the best German-language novel of the year by the Foundation of the German Publishers & Booksellers Association on the eve of Frankfurt Book Fair. The Prize is intended to draw attention beyond national borders to authors writing in German, to reading and to the keynote medium of the book and is endowed with 37.500 Euros.

The shortlist will be announced on September 15, the laureate on October 12, 2020.
