Sand is produced over thousands or even millions of years, and is today one of the most sought after raw materials on Earth. It is a key component in concrete, but also microchips are made from quartz sand, or from the silicium extracted from it. These kinds of microchips are found not only in smartphones and laptops, but also in drones, and they are used in the fields of automatization and artificial intelligence. For the present, that can mean that, in just a few seconds, drones destroy buildings and streets in conflict zones, leaving nothing but dust and sand. But such a finely ground sand that it is hardly suited to life or to being used as a raw material.
