This Paradise in which obedience is viewed as a virtue, curiosity as a sin and ignorance of good and evil is considered an ideal state of affairs, is alarmingly reminiscent of what is typically referred to as the »paradise of childhood«: Once a child refuses to follow the god-like commands of its parents, it is punished, and on top of that, is persuaded the punishment is for his/her own good. But what happens to the anger and pain a child must suppress, in an effort to see the emotional and physical maltreatment as something beneficial? Early emotional experiences often leave behind traces in the body which are stored as information. They influence our way of thinking, feeling and behaving when we reach adulthood, yet elude our consciousness. A frequent result is the creation of a vicious circle of violence. In her latest book, Alice Miller shows how this circle can be broken and how we can arrive at a deeper consciousness through gaining emotional insights into our own history.

Alice Miller, born in 1923, was a psychotherapist who conducted research into the influence of childhood trauma on the adult. In 1980, she decided to dedicate herself completely to writing in order to commit to her broad experience of the deeper meanings of childhood and share her knowledge of their decisive persistence in entire life with a larger public. Alice Miller died on April 14, 2010 at the age of 87.
