Kosovo, the autonomous province in former Yugoslavia fought over by the Albanians and Serbs, declared its independence in 2008 despite Serbian opposition.

Erich Rathfelder, who has been a correspondent in the region since 1987, witnessed the conflict between the Serbs and the majority Albanian population at close range: the abolition of its autonomous status in 1989, the peaceful Albanian protests, the UÇK’s armed struggle, NATO’s intervention in 1989 and finally, the civil interim administration phase.
