In Technology, Medicine and Ethics, Hans Jonas attempts to apply the “principle of responsibility” to paradigmatic case studies in the fields of biological research and medicine. To this end, he looks at a series of practical ethical questions (and for Jonas, ethics refers to the doctrine of the “good life”) that have emerged out of the explosive developments in science.

From which end of the broad technological spectrum, Jonas asks, can we most feasibly begin to apply ethical norms to this uncharted territory of responsibility? The best place to start, Jonas asserts, is the point where technology directly interacts with humanity, in the field of human biology and medicine. This focussed position allows Jonas to address the relation of technology to crucial human questions such as the meaning of life and death, the dignity of the individual, and the integrity of our conception of humanity.
