Lis Castrop is a world-class chef. After years working at a famous London fine-dining temple, she can’t say no to an offer that seems too good to be true: The billionaire Harman family want to employ her and her daughter Cosima to work exclusively in their opulent residence in Davos, in the Swiss Alps. But on New Year’s Eve, the festivities turn into a nightmare.After the dinner, Mr and Mrs Harman and their two children are dead, poisoned. Lis is the only witness – and she's also one of the victims: still alive, but gravely ill. She ingested a smaller dose, leaving her with five days until her certain death. Desperate, Lis wants nothing more than to spend time with Cosima. But to protect her daughter, she needs to solve the case – while the poison in her blood ticks.

From her bed in a luxury hospital in Davos, she fights for her life, supported by an unexpected ally: the palliative care nurse Esme. Soon enough, one question comes to the fore: Was Lis just collateral damage in a murderous plan – or is she more deeply entangled in the intrigues of the super-rich than she realises?
