The farmer told the author about her mother’s life on the banks of the Dnieper, desperately fighting to make ends meet, and about her own childhood during the time of collectivisation and famine (Holodomor) in the village of Dobenka, which was later flooded by the Kremenchug reservoir. She tells of her deportation from Ukraine to Carinthia for forced labour, and she recounts her first year on the Carinthian mountain farm.
This volume contains an afterword by Josef Winkler’s French translator Bernard Banoun and, published for the first time, letters written by Hapka Davidovna Ilyashenko in Ukraine to her daughter Nyotchka in Carinthia.
