One of the great thinkers of our time looks back on the development of his thought
The perfect introduction to the Habermas cosmos

In this book, Jürgen Habermas provides information on some of the motives behind his thought, the circumstances under which it evolved, and the changes it has undergone over the course of his long career. He tells of the process that informed the emergence of his oeuvre, speaks about texts that were key to his development and about decisive encounters with colleagues. Gradually, the image of a richly intertwined network of relationships emerges, which covers large swathes of the intellectual map of the 20th century, reaching all the way to the present day.
Looking back at the various stages in the development of his thought, Habermas discusses topics such as the specific situation from which his generation set out, identifies key experiences with his academic mentors, explores recent historical tendencies and political beliefs, and talks about his own scholarly works and their reception. With reference to his most recent major work, This Too a History of Philosophy, central concepts and argumentative strategies from the Habermasian cosmos are invoked and critically interrogated.
And time and again we see what lies at the heart of the work of this philosopher: »justifying an iota of trust in reason, and in our duty to make use of our capacity for reason.«
»[This volume] documents once more one of the outstanding peculiarities of Jürgen Habermas’s interaction with his oeuvre: he comments upon and revises his writings, responding in depth to the objections of others … Gradually, it also unfurls a minor history of the intellectual history of Germany after 1945.« Thomas Meyer, Süddeutsche Zeitung

Between Facts and Norms

Young Habermas
Roman Yos' analysis of the origins of one of the most influential works of recent philosophy is an original examination of how early in his career Jürgen Habermas was already gradually at work transposing his distinct philosophical-political thought into a viable system. This can be understood as a process of learning, the development of which saw contrary intellectual influences come together...
