Michael Gielen was born in Dresden in 1927 and emigrated to Argentina in 1940. He was the conductor at the Vienna State Opera from 1950 to 1960. Subsequently, he held chief conductorships in Stockholm (1960-1965), Brussels (1969-1973) and Amsterdam (1973-1975). From 1977 to 1987, he was GMD and opera director of the Frankfurt Opera. From 1987 to 1995, he was a professor of conducting at the Mozarteum in Salzburg. From 1999 until his death, he was permanent guest conductor in Berlin. Michael Gielen died in March 2019.
