Florence was very young when she was married to a priest who enforces strict rules in his home. When she seeks comfort and refuge with another man, her husband abandons her. Of her two sons, she is only allowed to take the younger with her, the older one has to stay with the father.

Neither her parents nor church institutions will give her refuge. She works as a nurse and carer in private households. When she falls in love with a wealthy widower, her life finally seems to change for the better – until he dies unexpectedly. Once again, Flo and the children are left without anyone to provide for them.

By now, World War I is looming and the Germans are recruiting spies in England. Flo, looking for a job, falls into their clutches. Her life is threatened and she is forced to spy for the enemy. There is only one way to protect the lives of her children ...
