Two missing women return at the same time after three weeks – one of them in Berlin, the other in Vienna. For both of them, only days seem to have passed since their disappearance. Even more curious still are their identical memories of the abductions. Investigators are baffled and decide to bring in Lea Goldberg, a scientist who carries out research on how memory works. She has been living the life of a recluse in Vienna for the past year, after her part in a horrendous miscarriage of justice. Her expert testimony on the innocence of a defendant led to his release, after which he then committed a gruesome murder.

The renowned psychiatrist Barbara Kirsch comes on board to aid the investigations in Berlin, and together they try to shed light on the women’s buried memories. But when the two psychologists meet, catastrophe ensues...
