Clara Leinemann has been awarded the €2,222 prize for her debut novel Yellow Monsters.

»In Yellow Monsters, Clara Leinemann dissects a failed relationship: She tells the story of Charlie and Valentin’s relationship starting from its ending, in all its ambivalence and interdependence. With a keen sense for complex characters, Leinemann delivers a gripping debut that develops a powerful pull. Her protagonist Charlie makes you want to shake her one moment and hug her the next, as you follow her through a toxic cycle of aggression and attachment. An impressive novel about troubled relationship dynamics and female rage«, the jury stated in its reasoning.

Three outstanding works were selected from the literary debuts of spring 2026 by an expert jury. The nominated authors presented their debut works at an evening event during the literature festival at Cologne’s Comedia Theater. The winner was then chosen by the audience in a live vote.
