Deniz Utlu has been nominated for the European Union Literature Prize 2024 for his novel
Father's Sea. What's more, just this week, Utlu also won the LiteraTour Nord Prize 2024.
The aim of the European Union Prize for Literature (EUPL) is to place a spotlight on the creativity and diverse wealth of Europe’s contemporary literature in the field of fiction, promote the circulation of literature within Europe, and encourage greater interest in international literary works.
The Prize is open to the 41 countries currently involved in the Creative Europe programme. Each year, national organisations in a third of the participating countries nominate potential winning novels, making it possible for all countries and language areas to be represented over a three-year cycle.
Father's Sea was chosen as this year's German nominee by the Goethe Institut.
The winner receives €10,000 in prize money, as well as a further €10,000 to be put towards tranlsation costs for international editions of their book. The winner of this year's prize and the five recipients of special mentions will be announced on 4 April 2024 at an awards ceremony at the Brussels Book Fair.
Meanwhile, Utlu was also announced as the winner of the LiteraTour Nord Prize 2024 this week, which is endowed with €15,000. The jury said of his work: »In his novel, Deniz Utlu writes in a poetic and warm-hearted way – and with a great deal of love for his characters – of a difficult father-son relationship, which, after his father suffers two strokes, is marked by his father's simultaneous absence and (physical) presence. In the process, a moving family history and story of migration emerges, in which the narrator's mother, with all of her selflessness, is revealed as the real heroine of the story. A clever and tender book that touches the reader, leaving an indelible mark.«
