Suhrkamp author Emma Braslavsky has been awarded the Thuringia Literary Prize for 2025 in recognition of her oeuvre.
Christian Tischner, the minister for culture of the state of Thuringia had the following to say about the jury’s decision: »With this year’s Thuringia Literary Prize, we are recognising Emma Braslavsky for her wide-ranging literary works, which address some of the big issues of our time. As an author, the Erfurt native has achieved a great deal of recognition well beyond the bounds of her home state. In her novels, Emma Braslavsky tackles some of the major fault lines in our society. This includes themes such as the feeling of rootlessness in the wake of the collapse of East Germany, the search for a more just world, climate change, as well as the theme of artificial intelligence, which is currently radically transforming our lives. In her not infrequently negative visions of the world, Emma Braslavsky manages to give the desperation of her heroes a positive twist through humour and irony. My sincerest congratulations go to Emma Braslavsky for this recognition of her literary achievements, and my thanks to the members of the jury for their enthusiastic work in choosing the winner.«
The Thuringia Literary Prize is endowed with €12,000 and is awarded every two years by the state of Thuringia, the Sparkassen-Kulturstiftung Hessen-Thüringen and the association Thüringer Literaturrat e. V. It recognises the work of authors who either have a personal connection with the culture of Thuringia or who address it in their work, and thus contribute to its intellectual and cultural life, and to its national and international reputation. Previous winners include Lutz Seiler, Jürgen Becker, Kathrin Schmidt, and Ingo Schulze.
The prize ceremony will be held on 5 September 2025 in Erfurt.
