The 2021 Words Without Borders Ottaway Award for the Promotion of International Literature has been awarded to Naveen Kishore, whom we at Suhrkamp are proud to call a long-time friend and publishing partner.
Words Without Borders board chair Samantha Schnee says about this honour for Calcutta-based publisher Naveen Kishore: »In his tireless work over four decades as founder of Seagull Books and the Seagull School of Publishing, Naveen Kishore shows us what it means to be a true champion for international literature in translation. We are thrilled to recognize him with the 2021 Ottaway Award.«
The award, named for the first chair of Words Without Borders, Jim Ottaway, Jr., »recognizes an individual whose work and activism have supported WWB’s mission of promoting cultural understanding through the publication and promotion of international literature.« This year, Naveen Kishore joins past recipients Sara Bershtel, Barbara Epler, Edith Grossman, Carol Brown Janeway, Chad Post, Jill Schoolman and Drenka Willen. The award will be presented to Naveen Kishore by Jeff Deutsch, director of Seminary Co-op Bookstores in Chicago, at a ceremony in New York City on September 30, 2021.
Naveen Kishore has previously been recognised for his dedication to publishing international literature translated into English with the honour of being made Chevalier de l’ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the government of France in 2014 and the Goethe Medal from the Federal Republic of Germany in 2013. »Under Kishore’s direction, Seagull has since published English translations of more than 500 books by major African, European, Asian, and Latin American writers, including works by Nobel Prize winners Mo Yan, Herta Müller, and Jean-Paul Sartre, as well as International Booker Prize-winner László Krasznahorkai,« reports Publishing Perspectives.
We are proud to say that Seagull Publishing’s German List includes many of our own authors and we are grateful to Naveen for bringing the works of Ingeborg Bachmann, Jürgen Becker, Friedrich Ani, Hans Magnus Enzensberger, Max Frisch, Durs Gürnbein, Alexander Kluge and Friederike Mayröcker (to name but a few) to an English readership with such loving care and attention to detail – not least represented by the beautifully designed covers with which Seagull furnishes each book. The selection above showcases not only the beauty Seagull creates but also many years of our fruitful collaboration. And may we say: we look forward to many more years!
