Suhrkamp author Josef Winkler has been awarded the Austrian Franz Kafka Prize 2024 in recognition of his literary oeuvre and his long-standing engagement with the work of Franz Kafka.
It is the first time in 23 years that the Austrian Franz Kafka Society (ÖFKG) has awarded the Austrian Franz Kafka Prize, and the award ceremony will take place on 14 June 2024 in Klosterneuberg. The prize is endowed with €10,000.
The jury came to the unanimous decision to award the prize to Winkler, noting that he has »engaged extensively with Franz Kafka as far back as his novel
Der Ackermann aus Kärnten (1980), but also in later essays, and cites him as an important writer for his work. Winkler’s oeuvre is synonymous with literature of the highest aesthetic standards.«
The Austrian Franz Kafka Prize is one of Austria’s most important literary awards, and previous winners include authors who later went on to win the Nobel Prize, such as Elias Canetti, Peter Handke and Herta Müller. The most recent recipient of the prize was Marianne Fritz in 2001.
