We are pleased to announce that Judith Schalansky receives the 2021 Gutenberg Prize awarded by the City of Leipzig.

The prize, a tribute to Johannes Gutenberg and endowed with 10,000 Euros, has honoured individuals and institutions who have »rendered outstanding, exemplary services to the promotion of book design« since 1959. The prize is awarded annually in alternation with the prize of the same name awarded by the City of Mainz.

The jury's statement reads: »Judith Schalansky [...] is a convincing campaigner for the medium of the book in the age of eBooks and digitisation. With degrees in art history and communication design, she courageously crosses borders and embodies three different professions in one person. She is a writer, book designer and editor all at the same time.«
