Beitrag zu Maren Kames Shortlisted for the German Book Prize 2024
Maren Kames has made the shortlist for the German Book Prize 2024 with her novel Hare Prose.

In their public remarks, the jury had the following to say about the book: »A journey begins, fantastic and bizarre – and there’s a rabbit along for the ride. Like the companion in Alice in Wonderland, which is also how he acts: like a cross between an anarchist and a petty accountant. Maren Kames has visited Friederike Mayröcker’s celebrity kitchen – and has freed herself from it, as evidenced by her virtuosic verbal seasoning, her velvety successions of images, sparkling linguistic wit and laconic handbreak turns. This wayward journey implants itself in the reader’s mind, leaving one buoyant, ready for everyday life, and utterly delighted: it grabs us by our funny bone with both paws – and hops light-footedly away from dull realism.«

The German Book Prize is awarded annually by the Stiftung Buchkultur und Leseförderung des Börsenvereins des Deutschen Buchhandels at the start of the Frankfurt Book Fair to the best novel written in German that year. The prize seeks to raise the international profile of German-language authors, of reading, and of books as a medium.

The prize is endowed with a total of €37,500, with the winner receiving €25,000 and  the other five authors on the shortlist €2,500 each. The German Book Prize is organised by the Börsenverein des Deutschen Buchhandels and is supported by partners from outside the industry. The main sponsor of the German Book Prize is the Deutsche Bank Stiftung. Another central partner is the City of Frankfurt am Main. The winner will be announced on 14 October 2024 in a public event at the Frankfurt Book Fair. Our fingers are crossed.
