The Joseph Breitbach Foundation and the Academy of Sciences and Literature Mainz have awarded the Joseph-Breitbach-Preis 2023 to Marion Poschmann for her literary oeuvre.

The jury praises Marion Poschmann as »one of the most radical poets of our time« and honour her body of work »which sets new standards for the art of poetry. Marion Poschmann’s poetry, like her prose and essay writing, explores what normally remains hidden. In her observation and perception of the everyday world, an accuracy emerges that does justice to the truth behind things without denying the apparent. Starting from the most inconspicuous phenomena, her poetic descriptions of the environment and nature, humans and animals, help us to abandon limiting illusions, to follow the subtle shifts of perception and to trace the world in which we live and the things that are at risk of becoming lost to us.«

Marion Poschmann, born in Essen in 1969, studied German studies, philosophy and Slavic studies and currently lives in Berlin. Her works of poetry and prose have received numerous prizes, including the Peter Huchel-Preis, the WORTMELDUNGEN Prize for Literature and the Hölty-Preis. Her volume of poetry Geliehene Landschaften was nominated for the Prize of the Leipzig Book Fair 2016. Her novel Die Kieferninseln was shortlisted for the International Booker Prize in 2019. Both Die Kieferninseln and Die Sonnenposition were shortlisted for the German Book Prize.

The Joseph-Breitbach-Preis is endowed with 50,000 euros. The award ceremony will be held on September 15, 2023, in Koblenz.
