Suhrkamp Verlag is pleased to announce that Nora Bossong and Maren Kames have been nominated for the German Book Prize 2024 with their novels Reichskanzlerplatz and Hare Prose.

Jury member Natascha Freundel summed up this year’s deliberations with the following words: »What is a novel in a reality that often transcends all our powers of imagination? On our journey of discovery through German-language literature published in 2024, we came across a range of books worthy of the longlist that managed to convey the magic of storytelling for today’s readers. These include autofictional texts that surprise with moments of surreal freedom; unembellished stories of loneliness, violence, and loss that also function as poetic affirmations of the self; historical and political novels that shed light on the looming darkness of dictatorship for the present day or take us into largely forgotten corners of world history as if we were entering a hall of mirrors. We were also fascinated by texts that interrogate the notion of storytelling itself, the possibilities of placing a language of one's own between digital blocks of text. All in all, we were amazed, we argued, we laughed, and we selected 20 titles that are absolutely contemporary, that beg to be reread, and that show the world not only as it is, but also as it could be.«

The German Book Prize is awarded annually by the Stiftung Buchkultur und Leseförderung des Börsenvereins des Deutschen Buchhandels at the start of the Frankfurt Book Fair to the best novel written in German that year. The prize seeks to raise the international profile of German-language authors, of reading, and of books as a medium.

The shortlist will be announced on 20 September 2024. The German Book Prize is endowed with a total of €37,500. The winner receives €25,000, while the other five authors on the shortlist each receive €2,500. The German Book Prize is organised by the Börsenverein des Deutschen Buchhandels and is supported by partners from outside the industry. The main sponsor of the German Book Prize is the Deutsche Bank Stiftung. Another central partner is the City of Frankfurt am Main.
