Rahel Jaeggi has been awarded the Philosophical Book Prize 2024 for her work Progress and Regression.

In their public remarks, the judges stated: »This book focuses on the challenges of the dynamics of socio-political transformation from the perspective of critical theory. Jaeggi uses progress to defend not what has been achieved, but the possibility of a different world. The very title of the book already suggests that this is no linear movement. In addition to practical points of orientation, this book first and foremost encourages readers to translate different worldviews into political concepts. To speak of progress means, following Jaeggi, being able to define a change inside of change that brings about qualitative transformations. Thus testifying to the usefulness of philosophy in the best sense of the term.«

The Philosophical Book Prize is awarded by the Hannover Institute for Philosophical Research and aims to boost the profile of contemporary philosophical issues. The jury honours the best new publication of the last three years in the field of practical philosophy. The theme of this year’s prize is »On the usefulness of philosophy« and comes with a cash prize of €3,000.

The award ceremony will take place on 6 September 2024 at the Dombiliothek Hildesheim, featuring a laudatory speech, musical performances, and a lecture by the prize-winner.
