Robert Schindel has been awarded the Austrian Art Prize 2024 in the literature category. The Austrian Art Prize is awarded to established artists and institutions for their life's work. The prize recognises multifaceted artistic practices, an extensive oeuvre, and artists who are continually developing the thematic focus of their work, and is awarded annually by Austria’s Federal Ministry for Arts, Culture, the Civil Service and Sport (BMKÖS). The winners are selected by panels of independent experts.
In their remarks on their decision, the judges had the following to say about the author: »Schindel has made a significant contribution to contemporary German-language literature and Austria’s culture of remembrance. He has used his origins in a family of anti-fascist resistance fighters persecuted under Nazi rule as a fertile field of exploration in an artistically unique fashion. He has done so by not only focussing on the perspective of the persecuted in his texts, but also on the difficult coexistence of the descendants of persecutors and persecuted.«
The award comes with a cash prize of €20,000 in each category.
