Beitrag zu Serhiy Zhadan Celebrates His 50th Birthday
On 23 August 2024, Ukrainian poet, novelist, musician, and activist Serhiy Zhadan turns 50. Zhadan is internationally recognised as one of Ukraine’s most important writers. His work has been translated into more than 30 languages and he has received a host of awards and accolades, most recently the Hannah Arendt Prize for Political Thought and the Peace Prize of the German Book Trade, both in 2022.

Academic Amelia Glaser has described Zhadan as »a poet, rock star, and activist whose verse is rooted his native Eastern Ukraine. He draws metaphors from daily life that in turn become the subjects of his poems, and Tkacz and Phipps have brought these images to life in an English that does justice to Zhadan’s urgent messages about life, war, and love.« Professor of history at Yale University and author of On Tyrrany has described Zhadan as »one of the most important creators of European culture at work today.«

In addition to his literary work, Zhadan is also an engaged activist. He was involved in the Euromaidan movement of 2013, and has been a vocal opponent of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. After Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Zhadan remained in his home city of Kharkhiv to organise humanitarian aid. In March 2024, Zhadan announced his intention to join the National Guard of Ukraine on the frontlines. Zhadan has been in active service since June 2024.

In November, Suhrkamp will bring out a German translation of a new collection of poems titled Chronicle of My Own Breath, gathering together new poems written since the Russian invasion in February 2022. Suhrkamp Verlag wishes Serhiy Zhadan a happy and above all safe birthday. Suhrkamp represents the international rights for all of Zhadan’s work.
