Steffen Mau has been awarded the Bavarian Book Prize in the non-fiction category for his book
Unity Without Equality.
At a live event, the jury discussed the three shortlisted non-fiction titles and the three shortlissted titles in the ficiton category in the Allerheiligen-Hofkirche in Munich. After 60 minutes, the jury, which included Andreas Platthaus (
Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung), Cornelius Pollmer (
Süddeutsche Zeitung) and Marie Schoeß (
Bayerischer Rundfunk), decided to hand the honours in the non-fiction category to
Unity Without Equality.
The jury had the following words to say about
Unity Without Equality: »Steffen Mau responds with insightful sobriety to the boisterous debate on the relations between the former East and West Germany, a debate characterised by mutual incomprehension. He provides historical explanations for why the East is different and will continue to be so – and why this might make it the ideal place to implement practices of democratic renewal.«
Mau receives a cash prize of €10,000 and a figurine made of Nymphenburg porcelain. The event was broadcast live on Bayern 2 radio.
The award ceremony was organised by the Börsenverein des Deutschen Buchhandels - Landesverband Bayern with support from the Bavarian State Chancellery. Bayern 2 is the media partner for the award, which is supported by the
ZEIT publishing group, the Bayerische Sparkassenstiftung, and the Verein zur Leseförderung.
