Stefan Haupt’s adaptation of Max Frisch’s novel I’m Not Stiller will have its world premiere at this year’s Filmfest in Munich, and will hit German cinemas on 30 October 2025, with Swiss cinefiles getting a glimpse of the film two weeks earlier. The leading roles are played by Paula Beer and Albrecht Schuch (best known for his role in the 2022 adaption of All Quiet on the Western Front), together with Marie Leuenberger, Stefan Kurt and Sven Schelkeru.
On a train trip through Switzerland, American James Larkin White is arrested at the border. He is accused of being the sculptor Anatol Stiller, who disappeared without a trace seven years earlier and is wanted in relation to his involvement in a shady political imbroglio. And despite the fact that old friends and his brother confirm the police’s suspicions, he insists that he is somebody else. In an effort to confirm his identity, the prosecutor brings in Stiller’s wife Julika. But she is likewise unable to make any definitive statements – instead, in her memories, she uncovers more and more details about their complex relationship. When it comes out that even the public prosecutor has a connection with the missing artist, the urgency of the question intensifies: What has happened, and who is Stiller really?
