Ulrike Edschmid Awarded Günter Grass-Preis for her Œuvre

Ulrike Edschmid has been honoured with the initial Günter Grass-Preis awarded by the Hanseatic City of Lübeck retroactively for 2021.

The jury states:

»Ulrike Edschmid‘s books are of a captivating intensity that makes her status as a contemporary witness come alive through a personal take and, at the same time, condenses it into language that is as precise as it is subtle. This intertwining of material urgency and aesthetic mastery enables her to make socio-critical observations with the special powers of literature.«

The prize ceremony will be held on June 10 in Lübeck.

The Günter Grass-Preis is endowed with 10,000 Euros. It replaces the »Günter Grass-Preis von Autoren für Autoren«, by authors for authors. Going forward, the prize will be awarded in turns with the Thomas Mann-Preis of the Hanseatic City of Lübeck and the Bavarian Academy of Fine Arts. This would emphasize Lübeck’s role as a city of literature while at the same time reflecting the cultural importance of Günter Grass’ œuvre, said Lübeck’s mayor Jan Lindenau.
